The Best Laid Plans of Mice and Men often go astray......
Well, after my day at sea with Doug and the crew of the High Current, I had planned to shower up at the marina and make the two hour drive to Savannah, stay there and do an evening Ghost Tour. However.....the day fishing was much more taxing than I had thought and a shower, a nap, so food for my empty gullet and sleep were the order of the day. I awoke on Wednesday still with sea legs from the day before, but with some effort was still able to shave the man looking back at me in the mirror. So I loaded up and headed for Savannah and with some coffee, some music and some miles under me my day began to improve and I was looking forward to Savannah, a city that I have grown to love.
Savannah has claimed many "-ests" for itself. The Friendliest City. The Most Haunted City. The Best Walking City. It truly is a place to just walk around and meander through the beautiful squares that dot the Historic District, get yourself a "to go" cocktail or beer, and take in the many sights and sounds and stories. I parked the car and headed down towards River Street or Factor Walk as it is often called. This cobblestone Boulevard that runs along the river use to be the port for cotton and other products and the huge old warehouses, now converted to shops and bars and restaurants, line the street.
After a brief walk I stopped at a little restaurant called Fiddlers, up to the second floor to sit on the balcony overlooking River Street and had myself Breakfast Savannah Style....A dozen oysters and a glass of Sauvignon Blanc. I was now officially feeling better. My walk along River Street found me stopping in many of the candy shops that make pralines and sampling their wares.
Up off of River Street I began my walk through the streets of Savannah. It was a warm and humid day, but great for that walk. Once again, the squares of Savannah are beautiful, each unique. The large trees. The flowers and shrubs some still in bloom. The hanging Spanish Moss. Walking and Sitting. Walking and Sitting. You might recall them from the beginning of the movie "Forest Gump" as Forest was sitting on a park bench in Savannah waiting for that bus. For the first time on my trip I thought that it would have been nice to have someone with me.
As I rounded the bend off of Columbia Square, I came upon The Kehoe House, billed as "The Most Haunted House in Savannah." Now a Bed and Breakfast over the years it has been home to a funeral parlor, a brothel and Joe Namath's private gentleman's club. Hard to tell which one of those prior establishments is haunting this place....perhaps all three. I have stayed at this place in the past and highly recommend it....and no, I was not scared by the ghosts :)
My time in Savannah was not as long as I would have liked it but it was what it was. It was now time to get back on the road and head south to Jacksonville to see my old friend Jerry Fuller.

Savannah sounds lovely! Although better shared, you're making memories. Enjoy!
